Championing the 'Think Global, Act Local' Philosophy to Promote Fair Trade and Industrial Growth

The Kenya Trade Remedies Agency (KETRA) is urging Kenyan businesses and industry leaders to adopt a "Think Global, Act Local" strategy. This approach seeks to enhance the competitiveness of local industries while simultaneously shielding them from unfair import trade practices.

Speaking to members of the Rotary Club of Nairobi North, the Agency Acting Executive Director and CEO, Mr. Samuel K. Chemisto, highlighted the immense opportunities globalization presents, particularly in countries within the Global South.

"We need to look at how the World is interconnected; it is an opportunity we must harness strategically. However, as we embrace global markets, we must also ensure that Kenyan industries compete on a level playing field," He said.

He noted that while open markets have accelerated innovation, expanded trade, and stimulated economic growth, they can also expose domestic industries to unfair import trade practices due to the stiff competition that they present to local Manufacturing and Production Industries.

The CEO further emphasized that Kenya has a robust legal and institutional framework that enables domestic industries adversely affected by unfair import competition to seek protection through internationally recognized trade defense instruments, namely: Anti-dumping, Countervailing and Safeguard Measures currently being administered by the Kenya Trade Remedies Agency.

These Instruments are fully consistent with the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and are designed NOT TO restrict legitimate trade, but to restore fair international competition where domestic industries have suffered injury as a result of unfair import trade practices.

"We encourage Kenyan manufacturers and producers to promptly report suspected cases of unfair imports so that appropriate investigations can be undertaken to safeguard our economy and strengthen local industries," he added.

The "Think Global, Act Local" (Glocal) concept, popularized by Sony Corporation founder Akio Morita, highlights the need for businesses to compete in the global marketplace while ensuring fair and lawful trade practices.

He further observed that while businesses must remain attuned to global economic trends and evolving international trade dynamics, effective responses require strong national policies and industry-led action.

Such localized interventions are critical to safeguarding investments, preserving jobs, and promoting sustainable industrial growth.
